Help for DTV Converts

Buying a digital converter box: Look for one with a good remote that has a dedicated button to turn the TV set on and off. (We like the Insignia and identical Zenith DTV boxes.) All come with cables - no need to buy fancy ones.

Saving moolah: Your final cost on a converter box can be reduced with a $40 rebate coupon or two from the NTIA. Apply at www.DTV2009.gov or 888-388-2009.

Want face-to-face help on DTV issues? The FCC is establishing walk-in centers, locally at WHYY, 150 N. 6th St. Opening date is TBA.

This Is Just a Test: On May 21, TV stations will simulate the upcoming, permanent cutoff of analog TV by blanking out the signals for as long as five minutes in duration, on as many as three separate occasions. Take heed!

Last-minute jams: Stations already are broadcasting in digital, so you can install a new box or TV now. But if you wait till June 12 and things don't work out, call 888-CALL-FCC. We're told 4,200 operators will be standing by that day and for at least a few weeks to follow.  *
