Hate your new Yahoo email? You're not alone

Reaction has been swift to Yahoo’s overhaul of its popular free email service, and a lot of it is not good.

Reaction has been swift to Yahoo's overhaul of its popular free email service, and a lot of it is not good.

Thousands of users have taken to the web to complain the switch last week to the new format timed to the email service's 16th birthday. Users complain about not being able to figure out how to reply to an email, not being able to figure out how to print an email, or having old emails disappear.

Haters have created a change.org petition with 3,640 "supporters" as of this morning. However, given that Yahoo mail has millions of users, it's a small sampling.

Other complaints: Tabs at the top of an email used to multitask are gone, drafts disappear when users go to check email, and the text is hard to distinguish for visually impaired users.

"Investors and advertisers need to take notice," the petition states, "Yahoo users are going to leave in DROVES if this isn't addressed."

The petition asks Yahoo to restore the old version.  The new version mimics some of the features of Google's Gmail, such as grouping emails by conversation.

CNET says other users report the new Yahoo Mail is buggy, forcing some to log-in again after getting a blank screen. Others say can't receive or open emails, but it doesn't look as if the old version is coming back.

Yahoo has responded.

"The recent design changes in Yahoo Mail are important steps to building a more modern and personalized version. We recognize that this is a lot of change and are actively listening to user feedback so we can continuously make improvements"
