Many taxi cab companies in suburban Philadelphia communities have been ordered to stop operating until they get new liability insurance policies.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on Friday ordered 66 cab companies, most operating in Southeastern Pennsylvania, to halt operations until they replace insurance issued by First Keystone Risk Retention Group, which has been declared insolvent.

A similar action was taken last week in Philadelphia by the Philadelphia Parking Authority, which regulates taxis in the city. The PUC regulates taxis in the rest of the state.
