Touch 'Em All: Replay delay may have cost Padres
Two batters into Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Padres manager Bud Black wanted to challenge a play.
Two batters into Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Padres manager Bud Black wanted to challenge a play.
The umpires said he wasn't quick enough.
The Dodgers scored three runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Padres, 5-1, taking two of three.
It took Black several seconds to come out of the dugout after Yasiel Puig laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached when pitcher Tyson Ross' throw pulled first baseman Yonder Alonso off the bag for an error.
"I challenged, and the first base umpire said, 'OK,' then they convened and they said they were not going to allow it," Black said.
Black said he was told that Ross had already gotten back on the rubber and Hanley Ramirez was in the batter's box.
Replays shown on the local TV broadcast appeared inconclusive.
Hard-luck Halos
This wasn't what the Los Angeles Angels had in mind when they lined up along the foul lines a few days ago to start a new season against a team that finished with 91 losses last season.
Their 8-2 loss Wednesday night to the Seattle Mariners marked the first time that the Halos were swept in a season-opening three-game series since 1992 at Anaheim against the Chicago White Sox.
The Mariners outscored the Angels, 26-8.
"That's obviously not the way we wanted to come out and open this thing up," said Angels third baseman David Freese.
Deferred bonuses
Mike Trout's contract with the Angels that starts in 2015 contains award bonuses for 2018-20 only - the three years during the deal he would have been eligible for free agency. He gets $50,000 for making the all-star team, $75,000 each for winning a gold glove and silver slugger, $75,000 for league championship series MVP, and $100,000 for World Series MVP. He would get $500,000 for winning the MVP award and $75,000 for finishing second or third.
Murphy leave defended
Daniel Murphy is proud he put fatherhood ahead of baseball, and New York Mets manager Terry Collins thinks criticism his second baseman received for taking paternity leave this week was unfair.
Murphy made his season debut Thursday, three days after the birth of son Noah. He called staying in Florida an extra day "the right decision to make" following wife Victoria's Caesarean section.
Major-league rules allow up to three days of paternity leave, and WFAN broadcaster Mike Francesa said on the air Wednesday that Murphy should not have skipped the second game.
A day later, Collins bristled after learning of the comments: "There's nothing wrong with it. You know, he missed two games. It's not like he's missed 10."
Nats' Zimmermann out
Washington Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann was scratched from his scheduled start against the New York Mets because of flulike symptoms. Tanner Roark started, in his place and the Nationals won, 8-2.
Royals-Tigers rained out
Thursday's game between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals in Detroit was postponed because of rain. Thursday's game will be made up June 19.
