A snoopy spy and a Snoopy dog bring some life back to theaters with 'Spectre,' 'Peanuts'

IT TOOK the combination of James Bond and Charlie Brown to save the box office after a disastrous few weekends of flops.
Both "Spectre" and "The Peanuts Movie" reinvigorated moviegoers who turned out in droves to check out the new fare.
"Spectre" took an easy first-place spot with an estimated $73 million, according to Rentrak estimates yesterday, to become the second-biggest Bond opening of all time. The 24th film in the 53-year-old series stars Daniel Craig as 007 and cost a reported $250 million to produce.
Worldwide, "Spectre" opened No. 1 in all 71 territories and earned a total of $117.8 million. It has earned a whopping $300 million worldwide in less than two weeks and still has yet to open in a few major markets, including China.
"The Peanuts Movie" took second place with a strong $45 million. The film cost around $100 million to make.
Audiences, 70 percent of whom were families, gave "The Peanuts Movie" a strong A CinemaScore, suggesting that word of mouth will be strong.
Holdovers "The Martian," "Goosebumps" and "Bridge of Spies" rounded out the top five.
Oprah's Faves
Oprah may no longer be on television to give out her favorite things ("You get a lip gloss! And you get a lip gloss!"), but that doesn't mean she's stopped picking favorites. Here are some of this year's highlights from O: The Oprah Magazine.
(Note: Some do not jibe with Oprah's new role as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman.)
"Letters to My Love" from Chronicle Books: O Magazine's creative director Adam Glassman says that these cute little keepsake books are Oprah's "fave, fave, fave" things on her list of things. They're books of 12 fold-and-mail-style letters with prompts for filling in the blanks.
The Bruffin: A stuffed brioche, muffin and croissant hybrid themed to countries in savory flavors. They're made in New York by a company of the same name.
Torres Black Truffle Chips: Oprah loves her truffles. These are "supercrunchy" and have a strong flavor. She first discovered them in Spain. Chelsea Market Baskets put six bags together in a woven container.
A&B American Style hot sauce: Anybody who knows anything about Oprah knows that she and Stedman need their heat!
TMI.
Square One Vodka: Made in the USA with organic rye and Teton mountain water. It's a set of five in flavors from Mel & Rose.
Moon and Lola pet ornaments: They're mirrored in a gold color and engraved with the pet's name.
Emi Jay nightshirts: Oprah loves her comfy (witty) loungewear, including these soft, stretchy gray nightshirts. They're emblazoned with: "I Told My Therapist About You," "Namast'ay in Bed" and "I Wish You Looked at Me the Way You Look at Your Phone."
Typhoon Vision kitchen scales: Retro-style, digital scales with stainless steel bowls to make it easier to measure dry and wet ingredients with little fuss.
Ultimate Lacquer Wardrobe from Butter London: 24 nail lacquers also chosen personally by Oprah. Rich color, free of formaldehyde and toluene.
L.L. Bean sledding tubes: Oprah is building new digs in Telluride, Colo., and plans to stash a few of these plaid tubes for guests.
LuMee smartphone case: In search of the perfect selfie? This case has built-in, front-facing LED lights to make that happen.
Anastasia Beverly Hills lip gloss: Oprah picked a set of eight from one of her fave companies. She swears they stay on forever.
Of corpse they do.
