N.Y. Phil music director

On Wednesday, at a crucial point in its history, the New York Philharmonic named a new music director - Jaap van Zweden, Dallas Symphony Orchestra music director. The orchestra faces a renovation of its Lincoln Center headquarters in future seasons. Van Zweden's five-year contract as music director begins in the 2018-19 season, roughly before the renovation begins, which means cutting short his Dallas tenure (meant to run through 2019) by a year. Esa-Pekka Salonen, now the orchestra's composer-in-residence, and Manfred Honeck of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra had also been mentioned as possibilities in recent weeks. A periodic guest of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Van Zweden was described by Dallas Morning News critic Scott Cantrell as "universally credited with raising the standards of DSO performances almost beyond imagining."
