Jeff Goldblum: Love earth

Did you know that Will Smith's blockbuster alien invasion action film Independence Day and its Liam Hemsworth-starring sequel have a moral message?

"One of the thrills about these movies, when they blow things up, you go, 'Geez, I didn't realize how precious it was to me,' " says Jeff Goldblum who played the genius scientist in the first film and returns this week in Independence Day: Resurgence.

"We love this planet, we love the Earth, and we love these little things we've made and little buildings we've grown accustomed to," Goldblum tells USA Today.

So what happens in the sequel that has the aliens launch another attack on Mother Earth?

"It's a horrible crisis and things look bad. Whether we snatch victory from the jaws of more terrible defeat, I can't say," Goldblum, 63, says.
