Villanova University students, faculty, and staff stretched their creative muscles - and helped the planet - in an design contest for a reusable coffee cup.
The competition, sponsored by Villanova University Sustainability, is one of a series of events to celebrate Wednesday's Earth Day, said Liesel Schwarz, sustainability manager.
The designs were hand-drawn or digital, and used up to three colors. Entries were due Monday, and students will be able to vote Wednesday for their favorite design.
The winner is to have his or her design printed on about 600 reusable cups that will be available on campus in the fall for $2. Those using the cup in a campus cafe will get coffee refills for 25 cents, said Schwarz.
The cups can be used in a microwave and are dishwasher safe, but not as durable as hard-plastic models.
"If it breaks," said Schwarz, "just recycle it." - Mari A. Schaefer
