Study to look into connection of personal well-being with activism
CHESTER Widener University has received a $10,000 grant and is to study the connection between students' personal sense of well-being and their involvement in the community at large.
The university is one of 15 colleges nationwide to receive the research grant from the Bringing Theory to Practice Project, a program sponsored by the New York-based Charles Engelhard Foundation.
The Widener project is to begin with the 2016 freshman class reading the book Letters to My Younger Self, a collection written by inmates at Graterford Prison and edited by Jayne Thompson, senior lecturer in English at Widener.
Lectures, outings, volunteering, and other events will also form the students' common experience.
The goal of the study is to see if the school can connect the students' common experience of personal well-being with community well-being so that students will continue to volunteer in their community after graduation, said Widener spokeswoman Allyson Roberts. - Mari A. Schaefer
