Philadelphia-area schools and colleges closed Thursday for Eagles Super Bowl parade

Calling the Eagles Super Bowl victory "a once in a lifetime event," Philadelphia Schools Superintendent William Hite has cancelled classes for Thursday so students and teachers can attend the parade. Other districts and colleges are closing, too.

You won't need an excuse to pull your kids out of class for the long-awaited Eagles Super Bowl parade Thursday if they attend a Philadelphia School District school.

All district schools and administrative offices will be closed Thursday, officials announced.

"The excitement of the Eagles' first Super Bowl victory is a once-in-a-lifetime event," School Superintendent William R. Hite, said. "For this reason we have decided to give our students, teachers, and their families the chance to witness history."

All Philadelphia archdiocesan schools in the five-county region will also close for the parade, the archdiocese announced.

The private schools Agnes Irwin, Episcopal Academy, The Haverford School, Paul VI High School, Penn Charter, St. Joseph's Prep and The Shipley School will also close.

A number of suburban districts have announced closures for Thursday, too. Among them are: Collingswood, Chester-Upland, Glassboro, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Interboro, Oaklyn, Penn-Delco, Ridley, Runnemede, Southeast Delco, Washington Township, William Penn, Willingboro, and Upper Darby. The Delaware County Intermediate Unit will also be closed.

Local colleges and universities closing include: Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University the University of Pennsylvania, Peirce College, Rosemont College, University of the Sciences and Temple University.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue and wind up Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum.
