Charlie Mack is back this summer, celebrities in tow, with his fourth annual Charlie Mack Party 4 Peace Celebrity Weekend tomorrow and Sunday.
Charles "Charlie Mack" Alston, a native Philadelphian and longtime aide and friend to Philly-born actor Will Smith, produces the series of charity events. Invited stars this year include Chris Tucker, Mo'Nique, Terrence Howard (also a local) and Queen Latifah.
Initially a celebrity basketball game started in 1990, Party 4 Peace evolved into a two-day charity event to raise money and awareness about violent crime in Philadelphia. Some of the proceeds will go to Mothers in Charge, a support group for women who've lost loved ones to violent crimes; Yesha Ministries, and other local nonprofit anti-violence groups.
The celebrity basketball game had to be canceled this year, however, due to lack of funds, according to Devon Allen, spokesman for Mack. But given the city's soaring homicide rate, Mack decided that even without a basketball game, the weekend would go on.
Allen said that celebrities such as Indianapolis Colts' defensive tackle Raheem Brock, who participated last year, contacted Mack and said they still wanted to contribute. They told him, "We want to do something, we believe in what we're doing," Allen said.
Most of the activities are by invitation only, including the Get Aphillyated VIP Party tomorrow night at Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe on South Street, and the Adidas Sunday lunch at the Adidas store on South Street.
Tomorrow morning, however, the public can join celebrities such as Mo'Nique and Tucker at the 100.3 Beat Celebrity Street Sweep and Peco Presents Southwest Day at the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center, 58th Street and Kingsessing Avenue. The celebrities will clean the playground and encourage the community to clean its streets.
Other expected celebrities include Tisha Campbell from the TV show "My Wife and Kids," comedian G-Thang, Los Angeles Clipper Tim Thomas and musical group Kindred the Family Soul.*
