Pop-culture princesses can unite with the DVD releases of two reality shows - Kimora Lee Simmons'
Life in the Fab Lane
and Kim Kardashian's
Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Simmons says, "I'm a fashion girl, that's my life." That she certainly is, and she isn't afraid to show it on her Style Network Show. She moves about her business and lifestyle filled with fabulosity, a word she coined herself and used for a book title.
If that wasn't fabulous enough,
Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane: Season 1
has been released on DVD. It offers a disc on the inner workings of her Baby Phat and KLS signature fashion brands complete with her couture children, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee Simmons.
Kardashian also allows her family to go under the microscope. The first episode offers a bond between the Kardashian clan - motivated by money and enthused by success. This is a trait that the Simmons family - specifically Kimora Lee - flaunts with the same passion as she has for her wardrobe closet.
Within minutes of the first Simmons show, a fashion urgency fills the room, as she walks into a board room and takes a seat at the head of her own table with her team looking on. What can be said about Simmons is that she has yet to embody the ruthlessness of Sean Combs with her employees, but she does make her faithful flunky and senior director of marketing have about five breakdowns, and that's in Episode One. Forget the devil wearing Prada - Simmons sports it with pride.
While Kardashian is a business person at heart, you would never be able to tell that with her mother's overbearing, and often meddlesome, persona. Although I guess the latter is necessary to avoid any more risque videos.
Simmons also shows that while she is all business, her true passion lies with her children. Aoki Lee and Ming Lee are prominent figures here and they get whatever they want. "I raised my children in the business," Kimora says in one episode.
In the last episode, her little girls oversee the creation of their own signature line of Baby Phat children's clothing.
The Kardashian disc does give the audience a look at a family in which Kim seems to be the most stable. Her personality, while worldly and experienced, seems to clash with that of her family, who thinks that she is spoiled - yet they have no problem with sharing her limelight when available.
Although the first season of
Life in the Fab Lane
centers on Simmons, a few guest celebrities make an appearance including hip-hop mogul and ex-husband Russell Simmons. In addition, true fashion watchers will enjoy seeing Andre Leon Talley, editor at large for Vogue magazine.
Special features include "Kimora Life in the Fab Lane Secrets: The Origin of Fabulosity," which tells her life story.
The DVD release of
Keeping Up With the Kardashians
features an un-entertaining look at the clan in all their dysfunctional and pseudo-conceited glory. Extra features for this disc include bonus segments and trailers for other shows.
Here's hoping that Season 2 will be better.
