Butters Soul Food To Go, 2821 W. Girard Ave., 215-235-4724.
At this small take-out operation, everything is made fresh and to order, so if you are in a hurry call ahead. Otherwise, have fun sitting at the wait table and enjoy the conversation. Best bets are the Fried Chicken and BBQ Pork Ribs. Dinners come with two sides; the String Beans or Cabbage can't be beat. 2.5 forks (2/27/09)
Earth Bread Brewery, 7136 Germantown Ave., 215-242-6666.
Beer geeks have been flocking to this Mt. Airy neighborhood brew pub. The former owner of Heavyweight Brewing, in New Jersey, brings his reputation and beverage to this friendly joint. Four of the brews on the menu are made in-house. The wood oven makes delicious "flatbreads" - aka pizza - but be warned: Not much else is on the menu. If you are into low-carb, look elsewhere. Wine lovers will find a small, but reasonable list with some interesting options. 2 forks (1/23/09)
Moctezuma Restaurant, 1108-10 S. Ninth St., 215-218-4008.
Just one block south of Washington Avenue in the heart of the Italian Market, Moctezuma Restaurant is devoted to "one-hundred percent" Mexican cuisine. You'll find the obligatory tacos and quesadillas, but there is an emphasis on the dishes from the Puebla region and Mexico City. Pollo Moctezuma is the best example. Questions about the Aztec decor and the house specials are encouraged and add to the experience. 2.5 forks. (12/12/08)
Swallow, 1030 N. American St., 215-238-1399.
You could call Swallow a "mac-eria." The concept is similar to a pizzeria with basic offerings along with the ability to create your own combinations. While the concept is good, the execution leaves a little to be desired. House specialty is the Mexican with cheddar, jack, chicken, jalapenos, sautéed onions and cilantro. 1.5 forks. (4/3/09).
