Dance fever

BalletX, which was founded in 2005 by two former Pennsylvania Ballet dancers to showcase cutting-edge choreography, celebrated its fifth anniversary Thursday at Davio's restaurant. More than 80 guests attended the party, which raised $22,000 for the company. The event honored Ralph and Suzanne Roberts, who were unable to attend. Among the silent auction items were dinner at a private home with founders Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan that went for $1,000 and four tickets to a performance by the Pennsylvania Ballet of The Nutcracker, which includes a backstage tour and the chance to meet Roy Kaiser, the ballet's artistic director ($400).

Dressed for success

The Career Wardrobe's ninth annual fund-raiser, A Perfect Fit: Fashioning Futures for Woman, was held June 9 at the Hyatt at the Bellevue. The event for more than 300 guests featured a fashion show with nine local TV personalities who modeled their own outfits that they then donated to the nonprofit. The benefit raised $80,000 for the Career Wardrobe, which annually provides free business clothing and personal-development services to 7,000 low-income women who are preparing to enter the workforce.

Building knowledge

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which dedicated its new 24-story Ruth and Tristram Colket Jr. Translational Research Building June 9, held a dinner June 8 in honor of the Colkets, who gave $25 million toward the $504 million project. Among the 160 guests who attended the dinner, held at the Colket building, were former U.S. surgeon general C. Everett Koop; Dr. Steven M. Altschuler, the hospital's president and chief executive officer; and Dr. N. Scott Adzick, surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital.

Homeless advocate

Gloria Guard, who steps down today after 27 years as president of the People's Emergency Center, was honored at the center's fifth annual Imprint Awards, held June 8 at the Crystal Tea Room. When Guard began working with homeless families in 1983 from the first floor of a now defunct church in West Philadelphia open only on weekends, she had a staff of seven and a budget of $194,000. Today, with 90 employees and a $7 million budget, the center annually serves more than 400 women and children; counsels families on parenting, employment, and housing; and has developed nearly 200 units of affordable housing in Powelton. More than 520 guests attended the event, which raised $132,752 for the nonprofit.

Class act

More than 300 guests attended Arden Theatre Company's biennial gala, the Granfalloon, held June 11 at the Comcast Center. The event began with cocktails and small-plate dining in Ralph's Cafe on the 43d floor and continued in the Winter Garden lobby, where guests enjoyed dessert and dancing to the rhythm-and-blues band LeRoy Hawkes and the Hipnotics. Chaired by Lee and Chris van de Velde, honorary chairs Rhonda and David Cohen, and gala committee chair Ronna Hall, the benefit grossed $186,500 for the theater.
