Comic smackdown

Showtime has ordered up a second season of "The Green Room with Paul Provenza," in which comics without a script match wits with each other in a studio "green room." Taping starts in January, with Provenza hosting Ray Romano, Judd Apatow, Kathy Griffin and more.

Aping 'Idol'

The latest "American Idol" imitation is a new show for NBC with the working title of "The Voice." Of course, they're looking for great singers that "leave a lasting impression." Auditions will be held in Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Minneapolis, Austin and Chicago. For more information and to register for these auditions, visit: http://www.nbcthevoice.com.

Free 'Showtime'

Showtime will slip off the clock and offer a free weekend to non-subscribers Jan. 7-10. That means you can get a glimpse of Toni Collette as alternate personalities in "United States of Tara," watch the sexy "Californication" and see who "Dexter" plans to kill next. They're also featuring some good films that weekend.

Andy goes for gold

"The Andy Griffith Show 50th Anniversary: Best of Mayberry" is a three-disc package with 17 popular episodes and great extras, including the show "pilot." The "pilot" was actually a 1960 episode of "The Danny Thomas Show," in which Thomas' mouthy comedian gets jailed in Mayberry by (over-) folksy Andy.
