The American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter grossed $300,000 at its 12th annual Red Ball, setting the chapter's fund-raising record for a single event. Held March 5 at the Please Touch Museum, the red-tie benefit featured food provided by more than 30 restaurants and music by CTO World Entertainment. The event's 1,100 guests voted Bistro at Our Town of Exton as the ball's best restaurant. Proceeds will benefit the Red Cross House, a short-term housing facility in West Philadelphia for disaster victims.
Crowning achievement
The Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania honored its 2011 Mardi Gras King, Dr. Mike Cirigliano, a Penn Medicine internist and Fox29 medical correspondent, at its fourth annual benefit gala, held March 4 at the Ballroom at the Ben. The 250 guests, wearing masks and colorful beads, enjoyed a French Creole dinner and dancing to the Tribeca Grand band. The Mardi Gras Gala, chaired by Frank Kotulka, raised $76,500 for the foundation's educational and outreach programs.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, poet Sonia Sanchez, artist Moe Brooker, and educator Edward Robinson were honored at the African American Museum in Philadelphia's 35th Anniversary Heritage Gala, held Friday at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Among the nearly 800 political, business, and civic leaders who attended the gala were benefit cochairs Denis P. O'Brien of Peco, Harold T. Epps of PRWT Services, and Thomas Woodward of Bank of America. The evening, hosted by NBC News correspondent Kristen Welker, a Philadelphia native, featured a filet mignon dinner, performances by Danco II of Philadanco and the Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, and dancing to Brass Construction. The gala grossed $400,000 for the museum.
