The government of Haiti has named Sean Penn an ambassador at large for the nation in honor of the actor's work in relief efforts after Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake, reports the New York Post.

Haitian Foreign Minister Laurent Lamothe offered Penn the job Saturday night at the Cinema for Peace benefit at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"I do accept," Penn exclaimed from the podium. He quipped that the new title would make his life easier, since from now on he wouldn't be addressed as "Hey you [expletive]," but as "Hey Mr. Ambassador!"

Saturday's event drew a bucketful of A-listers, including George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Demi Moore, Orlando Bloom, Mel Gibson, and Hilary Swank, who participated in an auction that raised $5 mil in relief funds. One of Bono's guitars was bought for $475,000 by singer Damien Rice, while Roberts' hubby, Danny Moder, shelled out $50,000 for a trip to Haiti with Penn.

Beyoncé . . . the horsefly

A horsefly discovered in Australia in 1981 but never named has been given a moniker inspired by singer Beyoncé, who was born the same year.

Bryan Lessard, a 24-year-old researcher at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, was so impressed by the fly's "bootylicious" golden-haired bum, he named it Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.

"It's extremely important to name all the undescribed species so we can measure our human impact on the environment and hopefully protect it for future generations to enjoy," Lessard says. He adds that he hasn't heard from Beyoncé, but he is a fan and hopes she will take it as a compliment.

Phillies Phanstormer on 'Jeopardy!'

Mount Ephraim's Brandon Libby, 33, returned to Jeopardy! Monday night as a two-time champ with wins Thursday and Friday. Both nights, he struggled in second and third place, then pulled a comeback, scoring $31,600 in all. But there was no comeback Monday night, when he came in last.

Libby, an actor and improv comic, told host Alex Trebek on Thursday's show about working for the Phillies as a Phanstormer, which involves helping with birthday celebrations, the Phanatic's hotdog shoots, and prize giveaways.

Trebek said, "This year, the team didn't speak for itself quite as often."

Libby said in a mock-warning tone, "Hey, hey . . . hey, hey, hey. . . ."

Libby said in a phone interview Monday he wasn't upset by Trebek's dig at the Phillies.

"Alex is the best," Libby said. "He is a great, great guy. . . . He's very genuine."

Elton John: Globe for Madonna? Ugh!

Elton John and hub David Furnish are not happy Madonna scooped up the Golden Globe for "Masterpiece," from her film W.E. She beat out Sir Elton, who was nominated for "Hello Hello" from Gnomeo and Juliet.

FoxNews.com says before the prizes were handed out, Sir Elton told an unnamed reporter that Madge had "no . . . chance" of winning. After she won, Furnish wrote on Facebook, "Madonna winning . . . truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit." He added, "her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism." Madonna told Us Weekly Sunday night that she hoped Sir Elton wasn't too mad. "He's been known to get mad at me. . . . He's brilliant and I adore him so he'll win another award. I don't feel bad!"

Golden Globes: The numbers

Ricky Gervais' muted performance as host of the Golden Globes on Sunday helped give NBC's kudofest an equally muted - flat - rating. It averaged 16.8 mil total viewers, according to Nielsen, compared with last year's 17 mil, when Gervais lit a media firestorm with his jibes and jabs at celebs.

Gervais: Bye-bye Globes . . .

It's just as well: Gervais says he's done with the Globes. "Phew! Thank [obscenity] that's over," he writes on his blog. "I had a blast actually. It was by far my favourite of the three hosting stints. I've told my agent to never let me be persuaded to do it again though. It's like a parachute jump. You can only really enjoy it in retrospect when you realise you didn't die."
