Q:I HAVE A TALL, handsome, extroverted husband who's the life of every party. He works in a place where he's surrounded by beautiful, successful women. He has lunch with them, goes out for drinks after work with them and even talks to them on the phone at night. We've talked about it more times than I care to say. He says they're just friends, and that he loves me and our two kids. I know I'm being paranoid, but I can't help myself. We went to a reception the other night, and I just know I had a scared look on my face whenever any of his female work buddies came around. I tried to act like I didn't care, but I did. How can I stop feeling this way?
Mia: You're right to check yourself. You don't want to be the type of woman who clings to her man, scared that some chick in 5-inch heels is going to lure him away. You're better than that.
Besides, one sure way to make him tempted to stray is if you get all needy, whiny and unpleasant. Confidence is sexy.
Work on your self-esteem. Get some therapy, if you think it'll help. And while you're at it, a makeover, too. And remind yourself that if that hot hubby of yours were really interested in one of those babes crowding around him, he would have been gone long ago.
Steve: The idea that a man can't be friends with a woman without making a pass is understandable. The track record for a lot of guys is poor.
But plenty of straight men and women have enduring friendships precisely because sex is not a factor. No pressure, no baggage, no fear - just friendship. Trust your man until he shows a reason not to be trusted.
Q: A friend of mine says semen can cure morning sickness. Any truth to do that? I'm struggling a bit with nausea.
Mia: Let me guess - that friend of yours is male and wants to sleep with you. In all seriousness, though, there is a researcher - Gordon Gallup at SUNY-Albany - who theorizes that pregnant women could benefit from repeated exposure to the father's semen. Nothing's proven as of yet, though.
