Thra-kooom! Ka-pow!

It's the most wonderful day of the year, for comic-book fans. Yes, it's Free Comic Book Day, the annual celebration of the greatest graphic art, the people who love it, and, most important, the thousands of independent stores that are more a lifestyle than a place to pick up the latest issue. Stores have special comics to hand out, plus any books they want to throw in. So, you can't just grab anything off the rack - but what's on offer is amazing: Adam Kubert's Superman: Last Son of Krypton; Scott Wegener's sensational "violent science" epic Atomic Robo; reprints of Rick Yager's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Hal Foster's Prince Valiant strips; Brian Bolland's Judge Dredd Classics; and David Petersen's not-just-for-kids Mouse Guard. There's a store near you, but here's a few we recommend: Brave New Worlds, at 55 N. Second St. (215-925-6525) and 433 W. Moreland Rd., Willow Grove, (215-657-8838); Atomic City Comics, 642 South St. (215-625-9613); Comics and More, Plymouth Meeting Mall, 500 W. Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting (610-828-5848); Showcase Comics, 874 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr (610-527-6236); Cyborg One, 44 E. State St., Doylestown (215-348-1451); Wade's Comic Madness, 8750 New Falls Rd., Levittown (215-946-9381); and the Comic Station, 615 Station Ave., Haddon Heights (856-617-0792). Admission: Free. Time: 10 a.m to 11 p.m. Information: www.freecomicbookday.com.
