Sweet fun at Sugar Cane Festival

Ninth annual event features music, animals, health screenings, more.

Have some presummer fun as the Ninth Annual Sugar Cane Festival, hosted by Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha and cosponsored by Peco, returns on Saturday with a day of information and activities on Fifth Street between Berks and Norris Streets.

The day will offer community presentations, face painting, animals from the Philadelphia Zoo, and more. Performances include the Kensington CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Drum Corps, Fuego Dance Company, urban pop duo Domino Saints, and singer Franco Olivo. Free health screenings and housing counseling services will be offered. Julio César Largo and Ilia Garcia from Univision serve as masters of ceremonies.

Fete Day at Elfreth's Alley

Step into the 18th century and stroll down Elfreth's Alley on Saturday for Fete Day 2013.

Featured will be colonial games and other hands-on activities. Children can go on a scavenger hunt and a mock archaeological dig. Historical characters Ben Franklin, seamstress Sarah Milton, and others will meet with guests. There will be demonstrations such as cooking, basketweaving, and spinning. Families can tour the houses of the residents of Elfreth's Alley and see how they have kept their homes' colonial character, as well as some that have been modernized.

All proceeds support the education and preservation programs of the Elfreth's Alley Association.

'Cinderella' at Broadway Theatre of Pitman

On Friday and Saturday, Broadway Theatre of Pitman presents Cinderella.

Based on the fairy tale, a young woman triumphs against her evil stepsisters and stepmother as they try to prevent her from going to the royal ball. Then the Prince journeys to find a woman who fits the glass slipper he has in his possession.
