Christmas Light Show

John Wanamaker's 57 year-old display lumbers on still. Show times diminish after the 25th, so make like Santa and check twice, lest you miss the 10-minute, every-two-hours, often packed-to-the-gills spectacle. Ends Tuesday.

'Elf'

The dude from "Anchorman 2" won't be onstage playing an oversized Santa's helper, but Ferrell's charmingly goofy replacement does just fine in this popular local rendition of the Broadway hit.

Sesame Place

"Elmo's Christmas Wish," plus more holidays-ed versions of warmer-weather traditions continue through New Year's Eve, when "C is for Celebrate" ends the lower-priced wintertime fun via an early-evening fireworks display and Count-led countdown.

'The Nutcracker'

African American Museum

Philly's best-known celebration of the Fruits of the Harvest takes place over two days of dance, dedications, storytelling and crafts.

Unless you've got a friend with a roof deck, best to catch Dec. 31st's river-top pyrotechnic shows on the balcony of the Independence Seaport Museum (family viewing party 4-7 p.m. Tuesday for the 6 p.m. show only) or from the ice of the RiverRink, with its new fire pits and cocoa stations (5-7 p.m. and 11 p.m.-1 a.m.).

This city park's Electrical Spectacle has been illuminating the streets above Independence Mall all month. The bright lights make their last appearance the 31st, with an afternoon countdown, dance party and crafts.

National Constitution Center

Through Tuesday at 3 p.m. (when it closes for New Year's Eve), the NCC puts on special programs about Washington crossing the Delaware (noon and 2 p.m.), being a kid throughout U.S. history (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. only Sunday), the backstory of the celebration of the New Year (12:30 and 2:30 p.m.), plus costumed characters and crafts.

The classic spot for wee ones to party amid midday confetti, Please Touch's "Countdown 2 Noon" happens twice while it's still light out.

ComedySportz Philadelphia

Our superb Renaissance wind band offers "Drive the Cold Winter Away," a program from their latest CD with French noels, Sephardic songs, pavanes and masque dances. Along with soprano Laura Heimes and Kiri Tollaksen on cornetto, their juicy sounds and bouncy rhythms are an ideal counterpoint to the season.

Jill Scott

Philadelphia Orchestra

Annual New Year's Eve concert, led by Bramwell Tovey, with soprano Tracy Dahl and Dance Affiliates. Classics by waltz king Johann Strauss Jr. and Franz Lehar, plus Waldteufel's "Skater's Waltz" will send patrons into revelry in three-four time.
