Ellen Gray's weekly TV picks

* MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES. 10:30 tonight, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Tyson plays himself as a cartoon character (see below) who solves "Scooby-Doo"-ish mysteries with the help of adopted daughter, Yung Hee (Rachel Ramras); a talking pigeon (Norm Macdonald); and the ghost of the Marquess of Queensberry (Jim Rash). Smarter than it sounds - though no less, perhaps, like an acid trip - but not quite smart enough to resist pounding on Iron Mike's limited mental abilities.

* FRONTLINE: THE RISE OF ISIS. 10 p.m. Tuesday, WHYY12.

For those experiencing news from the Mideast as a relentless recitation of atrocities or as a particularly scary episode of "Homeland," here's a not-dumbed-down report on how we got here.

* BENCHED. 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, USA.

Eliza Coupe ("Happy Endings") stars as a corporate lawyer whose temper cost her her job. Jay Harrington ("Better Off Ted") and Oscar Nunez ("The Office") play colleagues in her new public-defender gig. This new comedy, cocreated by actress Michaela Watkins ("Trophy Wife"), takes a while to find the funny, but over three episodes, it grew on me. "Happy Endings" diehards might still prefer "Marry Me" (9 p.m. Tuesdays, NBC10).

* THE BIG BANG THEORY. 8 p.m. Thursday, CBS3.

With "Thursday Night Football" at an end, CBS' scripted lineup returns, with ratings powerhouse "Big Bang." "Mom" begins its second season at 8:30, "Two and a Half Men" its final hurrah at 9 and a new entry, "The McCarthys," premieres at 9:30, followed by the Season 3 premiere of "Elementary."
