The Temple University Hospital Auxiliary shined as it hosted the 62d annual Acres of Diamonds Gala on May 2 at the Westin Philadelphia. More than 450 attended the event, where Stephanie Stahl, Emmy award-winning health reporter for CBS3, served as master of ceremonies. Honored with the Diamond Award was the Temple University Department of Emergency, headed by Robert McNamara. Also honored was Daniel J. Hilferty, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross, who received the inaugural Cherry and White Award for his long-standing commitment to improving health care; Fran Dunphy, Temple's head men's basketball coach, receiving the Auxiliary Service Award for his dedication to those in need; and Yoshiya Toyoda, Temple University Hospital's chief of cardiovascular surgery, who received the Trailblazers Award for exhibiting "courage, perseverance, and a pioneering spirit to improve health care for our community." The event raised $325,000 to support Temple University Hospital and the patients it serves.
