More than 400 people joined the Philadelphia chapter for the Buoniconti Fund's 12th annual "Raise a Glass for a Cure" fund-raiser on Nov. 6. Held at Vie in Philadelphia, the evening honored Fred J. Maahs Jr., senior director of community investment and national partnerships for Comcast Corp., with the Humanitarian of the Year Award. Maahs is the immediate past chairman of the American Association of People With Disabilities. The annual tradition of honoring a wounded veteran for service to our country continued, with Army Staff Sgt. Mark Viehweger receiving the Gerome and Betty Markopoulos Life Courage Award. The event raised $200,000 for the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and for Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to be used for spinal-cord research. The Philadelphia chapter, No. 1 in the country, has raised close to $1.5 million for the cause in the last 12 years.
