1,000 shows around the world for Bernstein's 100th anniversary year

Wherever you go in the next year, there Leonard Bernstein is. A monster centenary celebration kicks off Aug. 25 on the late, great composer-conductor's 99th birthday, continuing through what would have been his 100th on Aug. 25, 2018.

Big shows on tap in Philly and with Philadelphians include the Philadelphia Orchestra's Carnegie Hall season opener Oct. 4 playing Bernstein's film score to On the Waterfront and its Oct. 12-15 Kimmel Center program performing the complete West Side Story score. Curtis Opera Theatre will stage the former Curtis student's 1983 opera A Quiet Place at the Kimmel Center March 7-11. The National Museum of American Jewish History mounts a special exhibit, Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music opening March 16.

Elsewhere on the Acela corridor, the Kennedy Center will offer a season's worth of presentations devoted to Bernstein's legacy, the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theater will present several ballets choreographed to his music, and the New York Philharmonic has a full centennial slate starting in October.
