ACCORDING TO reports out of London,

Courtney Love

is said to be despondent and it's not because of rehab, an OD or a bad tab of X.

It's because the ashes of her ex, Kurt Cobain, have been swiped from her Hollywood home.

News of the World reports Courtney kept the grunge rocker's ashes in a pink teddy-bear-shaped bag along with a lock of his hair.

A few weeks back, however, she found the remains of his remains (ashes were also scattered in the Wishkah River near his Washington home and at a Buddhist Temple in New York) taken in a theft of her clothes and jewelry.

"I can't believe anyone would take Kurt's ashes from me," she told News of the World. "I find it disgusting and right now I'm suicidal. If I don't get them back I don't know what I'll do."

"They were all I had left of my husband," Courtney added. "I used to take them everywhere with me just so I could feel Kurt was still with me.

"Now it feels like I have lost him all over again."

Can you even get ashes insurance?

Hudson, Hathaway with the paps

It looks like Kate Hudson's latest love affair with Lance Armstrong has brought her new levels of paparazzi attention - although she was always a fave with Owen Wilson also.

Dozens of photographers swarmed the set of her new movie, "Bridal Wars," in Manhattan last week, forcing the filmmakers to temporarily shut down production, according to her co-star Anne Hathaway.

"I don't usually have to deal with a lot of paparazzi attention, but Kate does," Hathaway told Tattle's Laura Randall while promoting her latest film, "Get Smart" in Los Angeles. "There were - I kid you not - fifty paparazzi on the street and we had to call off the shot because they wouldn't get out of the way. We had to find a different location."

"Bride Wars" stars Anne and Kate as BFFs who turn into rivals when they plan their weddings for the same day. Hathaway describes it as "estrogen land . . . the director (Gary Winick) was literally the only guy for miles."

Except for the paps.

Neil Young goes electric

When Neil Young is mellow he can play a mean acoustic guitar. But when he wants to rock out with Crazy Horse he can amp up the electric.

Now, he wants his 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible to go electric. It probably doesn't get very good mileage.

Neil has teamed up with Johnathan Goodwin, a Wichita, Kan., mechanic who has developed a national rep for re-engineering the power units of big cars to get more horsepower but use less fuel.

The two are looking to convert Neil's Lincoln to operate on an electric battery - two AAs would really be impressive. Ultimately, they want Neil's wheels to provide a model for the world's first affordable mass-produced electric-powered automobile.

Gee, if only GM had thought of that (see "Who Killed the Electric Car") - and not been morons.

"Johnathan and this car are going to make history," Young told the Wichita Eagle. "We're going to change the world; we're going to create a car that will allow us to stop giving our wealth to other countries for petroleum."

Young has so far spent about $120,000 on the car, so he could probably afford gas, even at today's prices.

Remember the Stradivarius violin left in a Newark cab last month?

Daily News classical music writer Tom Di Nardo reports from Buffalo that local violinist Michael Ludwig, concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic, played the lost-then-found 1723 violin for this weekend's program with conductor JoAnn Falletta.

Buffalo arts patrons Clement and Karen Arrison, who own the Strad, attended and Mrs. Arrison told Di Nardo the instrument will go to the Stradivarius Society in Chicago until they decide on its future assignment.

Preferably someone who doesn't leave it in a cab.
