It’s Nicki’s Turn: Rapper Minaj finally takes aim at Remy Ma
No weekend in March, it seems, has been complete without a dis track coming from Bronx rapper Remy Ma toward her longtime nemesis Nicki Minaj.
Though Minaj famously lobbed the first bad ball with minor key menace on Jason Derulo's "Swalla," it was Ma's hardcore, 7 minute-plus Minaj takedown "ShETHER" that accused Nicki of everything from cocaine use, using ghostwriters and having sex with several top hip hop types in which to further her career. To add insult to injury, Ma then waited until the next weekend to drop yet another Minaj dis track "Another One" that equates Minaj with being a clown complete with funny wigs and noses.
The worlds of hip hop and gossip ate it up and made Ma the star she's been since her 2004 hit with Fat Joe and Philly's Scott Storch "Lean Back," and her debut solo album, 2006's There's Something about Remy, an upward trajectory cut short in 2008 when Ma wound up serving six years in Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for aggravated assault. Minaj's rise to fame and fortune started around the same time. Ma's career only began again in earnest when she was released in 2014, became part of VH-1's Love & Hip Hop New York series and released 2017's Plato O Plomo with Fat Joe.
While Remy Ma had her way with Minaj's rep, rap fans kept wondering where was Nicki's response, beyond hanging at Paris fashion shows and showing off her bare breasts.
Friday night Minaj finally responded with "Changed It," "Regret in Your Tears" and, most pertinently, "No Frauds."
Here, Minaj goes for the jugular by making sport of Ma's miscarriage and the disappointing sales of her comeback album, but she makes an even harder case against Ma by ripping the reason that the Bronx rapper went to prison in the first place – supposedly over a paltry amount of money.
"What type of bum b&%$h shoot a friend over a rap?/ What type of mother leave her one son over a stack?/ Lil' boogie down basic b&%$h thinkin' she back/ Back to back? Oh, you mean back to whack/ Back to back? Me and Drizzy laughed at that/ They say numbers don't matter, but when they discussing the kings/ They turn around and say LeBron ain't got six rings."
Drizzy is Drake, who with Lil Wayne, appear as guests on Minaj's new dis tracks. Maybe, it's not fair that Minaj used three rap superstars as opposed to Ma who did it all by herself. Maybe Drake needs more succinct publicity for his work after teasing a release date for his new mixtape, More Life, last week , only to give it a solid March 18 release nod on Friday.
Still, Minaj and her pals make some strong points and solid hits, especially on "Changed It" when she declares herself the victor with the lines. " I am Billy Jean and the b&$%h is my son/ I'm doing it for fun, I am the first number … This hoe getting slick, so I put on gym shoes and extended my run/ MJ, Game 6, Jackson, Tyson."
This one is either going to be like Godfather 3 and end here, or, I'll see you next weekend.
