Earth Day screenings — for your health

The Temple event will focus on conditions including diabetes and blood pressure, and also will have resources for expectant and new parents.

What better way to appreciate Earth Day than to take a measure of your body's ability to enjoy the planet?

On April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Temple University Hospital will open its doors for a community Health Fest with screenings for diabetes — which contributes to hundreds of thousands of Americans' deaths each year — and another common killer, high blood pressure, along with tips for your feet, colon, and mental health.

Expectant parents can examine baby boxes designed to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. Exhausted parents can get advice on disordered sleep, finances, and nutritious cooking. People worried about the addictive potential of their medications can get resources on treatment.  Kids can get their faces painted.

More than 35 health, wellness, and public safety exhibitors will set up in the Ontario Street lobby and courtyard of Temple University Hospital's main building, 3401 N. Broad St., with related panels in the auditorium next door.

The event celebrates a double anniversary: 10 years of the Cradle2Grave program, an interactive experience designed to reduce youth gun violence, and the hospital's 125 years of service to its North Philadelphia community.
