CVS introduces line of eco-friendly products

Now it's easy to "green" your everyday life. CVS/pharmacy just launched an eco-friendly line of products called Earth Essentials. Included are room mists made from essential oils, paper products made from 100 percent recycled fibers – and recommended by Greenpeace – and disposable plates and bowls made from sugarcane.

The most unique items in the new line are the sugarcane products. The tableware is made using bagasse, or residual sugarcane fiber leftover after juice extraction. According to a press release, normally this material is burned after "pulping," which causes air pollution. By finding a use for the fiber – in the place of plastic (made from petroleum and non-biodegradable) or paper (which contributes to the destruction of forests) – the environment benefits in more ways than one.

The tableware is also free of wax or plastic lining, but is soak-proof. You can use the sugarcane items with both cold and hot foods, though hot foods may cause moisture to form at the bottom of the bowl or plate. Also of note: The items should compost at home in two to four months.

The Earth Essentials line costs from $3.99 to $8.99. Find a store near you at www.cvs.com.
