The worst foods for sleep

It’s midnight and you’re lying in bed. You’ve turned off the TV, you tried to read a little, you are literally forcing your eyes shut, but to no avail you’re still wide awake. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there – and come to find out, it could be what you’re eating that’s keeping you up at night.

We've all been there – and come to find out, it could be what you're eating that's keeping you up at night.

Of course you know not to down the obvious post-dinner coffee or caffeine-laden iced tea before bed, but there are also a few foods that you would never expect to be equally as guilty for keeping you awake.

For example, a few squares of dark chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth before bed packs a surprising punch in caffeine. Or maybe a glass of wine to help you wind down? How about you skip the alcohol, which totally messes with your REM cycle, and go with some chamomile tea instead.

And don't even think about gorging on a steak at Capital Grille and then jumping right into bed. "Your body's not designed to be digesting food when it's sleeping," explains Kelly Glazer Baron, Ph.D., M.P.H, a sleep researcher and neurology instructor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, to Huffington Post.

Oh yea, and we're sure you don't throw down a double espresso right before bed – but you know that 4 p.m. get-me-through-the-work-day run to Starbucks? Believe it or not, that caffeine jolt can still have a lasting effect on your sleep schedule hours later. So if you're looking to get in bed early, sip with caution next time!
