5 Phila. hospitals ranked nationally on U.S. News’ Best Hospitals list 2014

Looking for the best hospitals in the area? U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings for 2014 and five Philadelphia hospitals came out on top.

Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian Medical Center made the national Honor Roll at No. 7, second in Pennsylvania, and first in the Philadelphia metro area. Penn moved up four spots from 2013's Honor Roll ranking at No. 11.

Out of just 17 Honor Roll hospitals, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota took top honors for the first time.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia tied Boston Children's Hospital for the No. 1 spot in the pediatric Honor Roll, with a ranking in the top three spots in eight out of 10 specialties.

To conduct the rankings, U.S. News raked through data from nearly 5,000 hospitals and survey results from more than 9,500 physicians. To make the best hospitals honor roll, a hospital had to score near the top of at least six of 16 medical specialties. Scores were determined by hospital performance, structural resources and reputation.

Nationally, Penn ranked in the top 10 spots for eight out of 16 specialties: Ear, Nose and Throat (3); Cardiology and Heart Surgery, and Pulmonology (7); Urology (8); Neurology and Neurosurgery (9); Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, and Gynecology (10).

Wills Eye Hospital took the No. 2 spot in Ophthalmology, while Thomas Jefferson University earned the No. 8 spot in Orthopedics and MossRehab ranked 8th in Rehabilitation.

In the children's hospital rankings, CHOP earned the top spot in Neonatology and Pulmonology. Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington ranked sixth in Orthopedics.

In Pennsylvania, only 12 of more than 250 hospitals garnered national rankings. Penn ranked second, falling to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which took top honors in Pennsylvania. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (4), Hahnemann University Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center (tied at 7), Pennsylvania Hospital (9), and Fox Chase Cancer Center (10) all ranked in the top 10 spots of best hospitals in Pa.

In the Philadelphia metro which included Camden, N.J., and Wilmington, Del., the 784-bed Penn ranked first, edging out Thomas Jefferson at second, while Lankenau tied with Hahnemann for the 4th spot in the metro.
