ALL WERE CLOSE TO THE VICTIMS

BEATEN, SUFFOCATED, SHAKEN AND THROWN, THE LIVES OF THE 8 BABIES SLAIN IN 2006 WERE ENDED WITH HORRIFYING CRUELTY. HERE ARE THE CASES.

* Marrieon Currie, an 11-week-old Frankford boy, died Jan. 23 when his mother, Lea Currie, allegedly doused him with scalding water, hurled him against a wall, chucked him down the stairs and beat him with a mop handle. After her brother found the infant and called 911, Lea Currie, now 25, reportedly admitted to paramedics that she had attacked her child.

Within two days of Marrieon's birth, hospital workers told the city's Department of Human Services that they were concerned about Lea Currie's ability to care for him because she had cerebral palsy, according to DHS records. DHS allowed her to keep the baby but sent a social worker to provide support services.

Shortly after her arrest for killing Marrieon, she was transferred to the Norristown State Hospital for psychiatric treatment and dodged one court appearance by going on a hunger strike, according to court records. Her case is scheduled for a pretrial conference on April 24.

* Jahmir Furman, a 1-year-old Frankford boy, died Feb. 13, two days after his father, David Furman, then 18, told police he dropped the baby in the shower as he bathed him. The coroner ruled the case a homicide after determining the infant's brain swelling, retinal detachment and retinal hemorrhaging indicated shaken-baby syndrome.

Furman later confessed and pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He is serving a 12- to 25-year sentence at the State Correctional Institution at Pine Grove, a facility in Indiana County for youthful offenders.

* Sajaad Jackson, a 4-month-old West Philadelphia boy, died Feb. 15 of head injuries after his father, Nigel Jackson, 33, allegedly shook him to death.

Jackson, a self-employed street vendor, confessed in June to killing the baby. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a pretrial conference.

* Maurice Calvin Fredericks, a newborn West Philadelphia boy, asphyxiated last April 19, within minutes of his birth.

Several hours later, Tanjia Fredericks' sometime-boyfriend found her bleeding on a makeshift bed in a crackhouse and the dead baby in a nearby toilet. Fredericks told authorities she'd gone into premature labor after a daylong crack binge.

Trial is set for June 1.

The city's Department of Human Services had investigated two previous general neglect complaints against Fredericks in 2002 and '05, according to DHS records.

One couldn't be substantiated, and the other led to her being referred for services, according to records.

* Elijah Wilson, a 4-month-old Hunting Park boy, died May 2, five days after his mother left him with his father, Virgil Wilson, 25.

The elder Wilson told police he dropped his son on a bed while playing with him, but the coroner said the infant suffered a brain injury consistent with being beaten and shaken, according to court records. Wilson faces a pretrial conference April 25.

The family was known to DHS. The day before Elijah died, DHS workers had received an anonymous report that his mother frequently left him and a sibling in their grandmother's care in a home infested with mice, roaches and fleas. The grandmother used crack in the tots' presence and occasionally left them unsupervised to go buy crack, the tipster told DHS. DHS workers weren't able to substantiate the report before the baby died.

* Alayiah Turman, a 17-month-old Brewerytown girl, died Sept. 7 after a beating. Her father, Tyrone Spellman, 25, first told police the girl fell off a bed but later confessed that he punched her in the face and threw her into a chair when she pulled the cord of an Xbox video game he was playing and knocked the control console to the floor. A coroner also found that Alayiah had a healed arm fracture.

Spellman faces a pretrial conference on April 25.

This family also was known to DHS. An anonymous tipster in August reported hearing a child screaming and an adult yelling in the home, which had no hot water and an uncovered hole in the dining room floor, according to DHS records. DHS workers substantiated that report, and a caseworker visited the home at least twice.

* Jysir Norville, a 5-month-old West Philadelphia boy, died Oct. 3, two days after his skull was fractured while his mother's boyfriend baby-sat him.

The baby's mother told police she left the tot and an older sibling in William Nurse's care so she could go assist her ailing parents, and three hours later, got a call from the 45-year-old electrician that he had called 911 because the child's nose was bleeding. Nurse told police he didn't know what happened. He said he gave the baby a bottle, put him in an upstairs crib and then noticed he had graying skin and wasn't breathing, according to court records.

The coroner determined the skull fractures came from a beating. Nurse faces a preliminary hearing on June 26.

The child's mother had four previous child neglect complaints in 1996, '04 and '06 stemming from her drug use, according to DHS records. Jysir was the subject of the most recent complaint, in which hospital workers reported that just after childbirth, the premature tot tested positive for cocaine, and his mother, for cocaine, marijuana and a tranquilizer.

* Taijim Chamorro, a 1-year-old Kensington boy, died Oct. 14, two days after his father told police the baby was injured when he fell downstairs with the child in his arms. The coroner decided the baby died after being beaten in the head and found evidence of previous head injuries and rib fractures. Taijim Chamorro, 21, was arrested. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 25.
