An off-duty police corporal was in critical condition yesterday following an early-morning hit-and-run incident on Academy Road near Morrell Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia.

The 44-year-old officer, who was not identified, was struck about 3:30 a.m. by a pickup truck. Cops said the driver fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

The driver, identified by police as Jeffrey Winarski, 25, was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants. The corporal was in Frankford Torresdale Hospital.

Veterans official here Friday

to help resolve problems

Ronald Pennypacker, director of the Governor's Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center, will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Vet Center , 101 E. Olney Ave., to answer questions and help veterans with benefits and other problems.

He will provide assistance with disability claims, records and medals replacement, job search and others interests. Veterans or family members may apply for services with proof of active duty service.

Man stable after shooting

A 30-year-old unidentified man was shot once in the right side about 4:30 a.m. yesterday on Bennington Street near Bristol, Juniata, police said. He was in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.

An ice-skating arena in Aston, Delaware County, reopened yesterday after a Zamboni vehicle caught fire Friday night on one of its rinks. The Ice Works was evacuated about 11:30 p.m. after the Zamboni, a vehicle used to smooth the ice, went up in flames and smoke filled the four-rink arena. Three of the rinks were reopened.

Camden man, 21, arrested

in fatal Nov. 24 shooting

Camden police on Saturday arrested Richard Barge, 21, of Camden, in the murder of Nicholas Syders, 22, of Camden, on Nov. 24 in a parking lot at Broadway and Spruce Street. Syders was in his Toyota Solara when a gunman opened fire. The car proceeded a short distance and struck a wall. Syders was pronounced dead at the scene. *
