A handgun was found in a student's bookbag at Frankford High School shortly after 8 a.m. yesterday as students were entering the building.

"We have an X-ray machine and a metal detector, and it picked up the handgun," said Fernando Gallard, a school district spokesman.

"It was immediately confiscated and the student ran away," he added.

The school was placed under lockdown while school police searched unsuccessfully for the student, identified only as a 17-year-old male junior.

City police were called in to search the area around the school, on Oxford Avenue near Wakeling Street, in Frankford, but failed to find the teen. *
