No bail for kid-sex defendant

A Russian-American entrepreneur must remain behind bars while he awaits trial on charges of leading a child-sex ring, a federal judge ruled yesterday.

U.S. District Judge Mary McLaughlin said a magistrate judge had been wrong to grant bail to Andrew Mogilyansky, 38, of Richboro, Bucks County. McLaughlin calls Mogilyansky a flight risk and says he has enough money to take his family with him.

Mogilyansky is accused of luring young teenage girls at a Russian orphanage into prostitution and sharing in the profits.

Feds: Firm bilked IRS of $7M

The Justice Department says a tax firm in Coatesville, Chester County, cost the federal government as much as $7 million by claiming bogus tax deductions and credits for its clients.

The government has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia against Chalamar Muhammad; her husband, Curtis Muhammad; and her mother, Doranna Muhammad, operators of CDC Tax Preparation and Financial Services. The suit seeks to prevent them from filing tax returns.

Penn student dies from fall

A University of Pennsylvania student died early yesterday morning at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from injuries suffered in a fall from a dormitory over the weekend.

Phyllis Holtzman, a spokeswoman for the university, said that Ryan Smith, a digital-media-design major in the school of engineering fell from the fifth floor of a dorm. Police are still investigating the incident.

New Pa. rep deployed to Iraq

State representative-elect Nick Miccarelli, R-Delaware County, announced yesterday that he is being deployed to Iraq as a member of the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Last month, Miccarelli defeated John DeFrancisco, former president of the United Aerospace Workers Local 1069, to replace outgoing state Rep. Ron Raymond. Miccarelli said constituent services would not be interrupted in his district, the 162nd.

3 charged in Rowan assaults

Three men are under arrest for separate assaults on two students at Rowan University in Glassboro last month. Authorities say Lance Husser, 23; Landis Husser, 20, and Ernest Watson Jr., 23, all of Woodstown, were arrested Wednesday. *
