Man shot in both legs A man in his 30s was shot several times in both legs at about 7:40 p.m. yesterday, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was wounded at Jasper and Venango streets, in the Harrowgate section of the city. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical but stable condition. Latino nonprofit gets grant
Congreso de Latinos Unidos, a nonprofit organization that works to strengthen Latino communities, has received a $7,500 grant from St. Christopher's Foundation for Children to support the Maternal and Family Health Project, Congreso officials announced.
Julie Cousler Emig, vice president of the Health Promotion and Wellness Services Division at Congreso, said that the money would be used for parenting and prenatal education, including providing SEPTA tokens for parents to use to attend classes.
Move to revive youth confab
U.S. Reps. Chaka Fattah, D-Pa., and Todd Platts, R-Pa., have introduced legislation to re-establish a White House Conference on Children and Youth, intended to raise awareness regarding the basic needs of young people.
Although the conference was initiated almost 100 years ago by President Theodore Roosevelt, it has been almost 40 years since the last one was held.
Reward for burglary info
The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and convictions of the three men who burglarized the Daeho America fur shop in the More Shopping Center, Elkins Park, Jan. 9 and made off with about $200,000 in merchandise. One of the suspects is described as being 50 to 60 years old. The two others are in their 20s. Anyone with information about the crime should call the commission at 215-546-TIPS.

State Sen. LeAnna M. Washington is sponsoring two free financial literacy and housing-assistance workshops today. The first will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Jenkintown Free library, 460 Old York Road, in Jenkintown, the second at 6 p.m. at the Abington Free Library, at 1030 Old York Road, Abington.
2 sued in solicitation scam
Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett has filed a civil lawsuit against Robert M. Friend and his wife, Shao Mei Wang, of Gig Harbor, Wash., accusing them of scamming Pennsylvania consumers of more than $500,000 by soliciting money they claimed would go to injured firefighters, police officers veterans.
The suit also names three corporations created and controlled by the couple: Disabled Firefighters Foundation, American Veterans Coalition and National Association of Disabled Police Officers. *
