Gunfire throughout the city injured at least 10 people this weekend, including one bullet that pierced the leg of a robbery target and landed in the foot of a 3-year-old boy.
An off-duty police officer also narrowly escaped injury yesterday when his car was riddled by gunfire from a bar patron who allegedly laid in wait for the cop after the officer intervened in a fight and the man was kicked out of the bar.
The incident involving the child took place about 2:37 p.m. Saturday when a 42-year-old man standing on the corner of West Rockland Street near North 12th in the city's Logan section was approached by two men, one of whom attempted to grab a chain from around his neck, according to Officer Christine O'Brien, police spokeswoman.
When the victim tried to physically push the robber away, the man's accomplice pulled a gun and shot the victim one time in the right leg, police said.
The bullet went through the man's leg and hit the right foot of a 3-year-old boy who lives on the block and was playing nearby, according to police.
Both victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition and later released.
The suspects hopped into a blue Dodge Caravan driven by a third man. The vehicle was recovered within an hour of the incident on West Wingohocking Street near Old York Road, about a half-mile from the scene, O'Brien said.
An off-duty officer from the 35th District was socializing at the J Street Cafe on East Erie Avenue near J Street in Juniata early yesterday morning when an altercation broke out inside the bar between a man and a woman, East Detectives Sgt. Tom Walsh said.
The man, identified by police as 20-year-old Darren Tores, allegedly pushed the woman and the off-duty cop intervened to break up the fight.
As a result, Tores was escorted out of the bar, Walsh said. But he didn't leave, and instead waited in his car for the off-duty cop to exit, according to police.
As the officer was getting into his car, Tores allegedly fired seven shots from a .45-caliber semiautomatic from his own vehicle, striking the officer's personal car several times but missing him, Walsh said.
Tores fled the scene and remains on the lam, according to police.
