The 13 final American Idol contestants performed Pink's song "So What?" as a group on the finale show Wednesday. Pink posted the message above to her Twitter account the next day. The day after that, dozens of celeb rags couldn't resist butchering the context to make neat headlines like "Pink: 'American Idol' Finalists 'Butchered' My Song," "Pink Hated The Top 13 On American Idol Singing 'So What,' " and "Tweet of the Day: Pink's Not Impressed."
What's strange is that every one of these publications is working from the exact same tiny amount of source material: 140 poorly punctuated characters that SatTatt thinks pretty clearly mean that Pink did not watch the "Idol" finale but that one of her friends thought they didn't do a good job with her song.
Yet everywhere SatTatt could find that mentioned this came up with the same interpretation: Pink's a stuck-up jerk who is mad that amateurs didn't perform her song up to her standards. Jeer!
Most of the articles are so similar, in sentiment and words, that it almost seems like the writers were just scanning the Internet and rewording and passing on whatever they find, without thinking for themselves about whether they agree with the original interpretation.
In new media-speak, this is called reblogging, and SatTatt was a little creeped out to see it leaking into places like NBC.
Of course, Pink may have a legit bone to pick with "American Idol" over another misinterpretation. Back in the days of Sanjaya, the show's producers pressured Pink, who was set to perform her hit "U + Ur Hand" on "Idol" 's charity special, to change the lyrics to "U + Ur Heart."
In case you're not familiar with Pink's body of work, "U + Ur Hand" is a song that was omnipresent on the radio a couple of years ago, with a chorus about not being there for your entertainment. Remember now?
The lyrics, which SatTatt had never given any thought to until right now, boil down to "Dude, stop groping me - I don't want to dance or sleep with you. Back off!" ending each chorus of aggressive-dude rejection with "It's just you and your hand tonight."
SatTatt honestly can't tell you what the producers originally thought that meant. It seems like a very clear masturbation reference to her. Sock puppets, maybe?
Pink refused to make the lyrics more family-friendly and ended up performing another song instead. But she has mentioned in interviews how ridiculous she thought the whole business was.
It's ridiculous that SatTatt has devoted an entire column to Pink. She doesn't even like that song! But the lady is getting misrepresented in a way that's creepily indicative of where journalism's heading, and it's bad news. *
