An unidentified man was injured yesterday when he fell on a police officer who was chasing him, causing the officer's pistol to discharge and the suspect to be struck by a ricocheting bullet.

Lt. Frank Vanore said that the officer was chasing the man suspected of stealing items from a Sunoco gas station at Passyunk Avenue and 28th Street, South Philadelphia. The two climbed over a fence and the suspect fell on the officer. The man was hit in the thigh but was not seriously hurt. He was charged with theft.

Flash mob ups cops on South

In light of May 30's flash-mob vandalism on South Street, an increased city police presence was placed in the area Saturday night, with additional help from state police mounted units.

There were no major incidents of violence, though 24 arrests were reported, police said.

Lady of Hope school to close

The Rev. Efren Esmilla, pastor of Our Lady of Hope Parish, in Logan, has announced that his recommendation to close Our Lady of Hope Parish elementary school has been accepted by Cardinal Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia. The school will close at the end of this school year.

Students will be shifted to nearby Catholic elementary schools including DePaul Catholic School (formerly St. Martin de Porres Interparochial School), in Germantown; Incarnation of Our Lord Parish School; in Olney, St. William Parish School, in Lawncrest; and St. Timothy Parish School, in Lower Mayfair. *
