Bake sales, chicken barbecues and other charitable food sales would be safe from state health inspections under a bill on its way to the state House of Representatives. The state Senate passed the bill unanimously yesterday. The bill is in response to an incident last spring near Pittsburgh in which church volunteers were cutting slices of homemade pies to sell at a fundraiser when a state food-safety inspector warned them that selling baked goods made in an unlicensed kitchen is illegal.

A 7-year-old boy helped save his 10-year-old brother, grabbing him after he fell through the ice Sunday on a lagoon in Margate, N.J., and holding on until help arrived. Tristan Lavin kept hold of Sage Lavin until police got there and pulled the boy from the frigid waters. Police said the brothers took boogie boards onto the bay and were standing on the ice when it gave way under Sage.
