The Delaware County medical examiner ruled yesterday that Wednesday's death of a 6-month-old Ridley Township boy was a homicide.

Police said that baby Robert Beyers' mother, in the throes of deep depression, slashed his wrist, and then her own inside their home.

"She had some psychological issues and she was going through some marital problems. They were trying to get her help and obviously it didn't work," said Detective Lt. Scott Willoughby. "She left a note that she was going to take the life of the baby and herself. The baby ended up passing and she didn't."

The 29-year-old woman, whom police are not yet naming, was in a medically induced coma at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

The woman's mother discovered the gruesome scene Wednesday inside the 6th Avenue home and called 9-1-1.

"She was in bed with the baby all day," Willoughby said of the mother. "She slit his one wrist, and then she ended up slitting both of her wrists. The baby was deceased when we got there. They tried CPR to no avail."

Willoughby said the woman would likely be charged with murder today.
