Officers who interrupted a burglary early yesterday in Northeast Philadelphia shot the alleged intruder after he pointed a gun at them, police said.

Julius Whitfield, 24, of Wells Street near Frontenac, was in stable condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center with a leg wound after the 3 a.m. incident on Fanshawe Street near Castor Avenue, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Whitfield was charged with burglary, aggravated assault and related offenses, Vanore said. He has four prior arrests, according to records.

The incident began when a resident returned home to see lights on and movement inside a bedroom, Vanore said. The resident called police, who discovered the burglar and pursued him through the house. The burglar brandished a semiautomatic handgun, and an officer fired at him once, Vanore said.
