Teen charged with killing South Philadelphia man

Police yesterday announced the arrest of a 17-year-old who they said shot and killed a 67-year-old South Philadelphia man Wednesday.

Investigators didn't identify the teen because he is a juvenile but said he had shot Harvey Marinoff, of Tasker Street near 27th, and then robbed him of his gun and car.

Investigators said the victim knew the teen but they didn't know their relationship.

Police were called to Marinoff's house Thursday to check on his well-being after neighbors reported that the door to his house was open, cops said.

Officers entered the house and saw blood in the hallway and a fired shell casing in one of the rooms. The victim's body was found lying in a crawlspace under a stairway, according to investigators.

Marinoff was pronounced dead on the scene. Cops said he suffered a gunshot wound to the small of his back and blunt force trauma to the head, and was possibly strangled.

Outside his home yesterday, a small memorial of teddy bears, flowers and signs was growing.

Neighbors said he used to own a check-cashing store and was a nice man.

"I don't know what happened but he was a good dude," said one neighbor, who declined to give his name.
