A 47-YEAR-OLD construction worker had to have 90 percent of his right leg amputated after it was crushed by a slab of concrete that fell from the Lafeyette Building on 5th Street near Chestnut yesterday.

The accident occurred at 12:50 p.m. when part of a concrete column fell from a 10-story building. Two other workers were injured in the collapse, and all were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, fire officials said.

The workers were excavating the foundation of the building when the accident occurred, according to Maura Kennedy, a spokeswoman for the Department of Licenses & Inspections. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration is investigating. Kennedy added that the construction company has been told to hire an engineer to evaluate the building.
