A 20-year-old man was hospitalized in stable condition and likely will face criminal charges after accidentally shooting himself on a SEPTA train last night.

About 6:30 p.m., the man was on a northbound Market-Frankford Line train on Frankford Avenue near Church Street when he shot himself in the right thigh, police said.

The car he was riding in was carrying up to 40 passengers. He and another man - who ran off before police arrived - disembarked at Church Street, and the shooting victim collapsed in front of a convenience store, cops said.

The man initially told police that a man with a dark complexion and a teardrop tattoo under his left eye had shot him, but a crowd of witnesses told cops the injured man had the gun out on the train and accidentally shot himself.

Chief Inspector Scott Small told the Daily News late last night that the man did not have a permit for the gun. "If someone's carrying a gun on a train, they had better have a permit to carry, " Small said.

SEPTA police were reviewing video from inside the car.

Medics took the man to Temple University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Alleged robber's mug shot released

* Girard Avenue near 2nd Street

Police yesterday released a mug shot of Hector Martinez, 29, who apparently didn't have time to squeeze in a haircut before cops nabbed him for allegedly robbing a Hyperion Bank on Girard Avenue near 2nd Street Oct. 12.

FBI spokesman Agent J.J. Klaver said last week that two eagle-eyed Daily News readers had recognized the alleged bandit from a surveillance photograph that accompanied the "Catch Me If You Can" feature in the Oct. 20 Daily News and tipped off authorities to where he lived. The photo did not show off his unique hairstyle.

He was arrested Thursday at his home on Torresdale Avenue near Unruh, in Tacony.

Police said that Martinez presented the teller with a threatening demand note and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

He faces charges of bank robbery and related offenses, Klaver said.
