Jury convicts man in couple's shooting death

IT TOOK a Philadelphia jury less than a day to find Donald Guy guilty Friday of killing a husband and wife inside the couple's Feltonville clothing store in July 2008.

Common Pleas Judge Linda Carpenter immediately sentenced Guy, 23, to two consecutive life sentences for the murders, plus 35 to 70 years for robbery and related crimes.

The verdict, read just after 2 p.m., caused the tall, bearded defendant to wince as if in disbelief and to complain that he was displeased with his court-appointed attorney, Jay Gottlieb.

"I feel as though I had ineffective counsel," said Guy, who told Carpenter he would appeal.

Guy told his family in the courtroom that he loved them.

"Don't cry for me," he said. "I'm cool."

He offered no remorse to his victims, Amissi Ndikumasabo, 41, and his wife, Bintou Soumare, 45. Guy shot both in the head during a botched afternoon robbery.

"I think he presented himself today as he did throughout the trial, and I think the same as he did inside the store that day - very cold and a killer," said Assistant District Attorney Bill Davis.

The carnage inside the couple's Urban Wear store on Wyoming Avenue near Mascher Street ended their American dream and left their two sons without parents.

The couple immigrated in the 1990s to the U.S. from Mali, in West Africa, and worked together in the store.

Guy's accomplice, Thomas Foggy, 23, who last week pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree murder, testified that he and Guy had gone to the store to commit a robbery and that for some reason Guy turned his gun on his victims. Foggy accepted a negotiated prison sentence of 27 1/2to 65 years.
