Cops: Kids on bikes charged in 2 attacks

Police have arrested a 16-year-old and two 12-year-olds for incidents in Center City and Fairmount.

DRIVING your car in Center City on a weeknight.

Fairly safe situation, right?

Not for a Fairmount couple who police say were attacked by a small group of rampaging punks on bicycles at 18th and Lombard streets.

Cops say the driver and his wife, both 31, were stopped at a red light at 8:34 p.m. Thursday when the kids pulled up on bikes in front of the vehicle.

One opened the passenger door and tried to pull the woman out. When her husband started to back up, the kids hurled rocks, causing him to strike parked vehicles, according to police.

The couple escaped without injury, but a Francisville man was not so lucky an hour later.

At 9:33 p.m., the 24-year-old man said he saw a man chasing the boys on bicycles down Fairmount Avenue near 19th Street after they had struck the side mirrors of parked vehicles.

When the Francisville man confronted the kids, one splashed him with a bottle of water as another got behind him and sucker-punched him in the jaw, knocking him unconscious.

The man was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment of a fractured jaw and a cut above his left eyebrow.

Police later apprehended a 16-year-old and two 12-year-olds on Broad Street in Spring Garden. Their arrests were announced Saturday.

The three boys were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, criminal conspiracy and related offenses for alleged roles in both incidents.
