Report: Man killed by Phila. police officer

Inquirer staff writer Peter Mucha reports:

Witnesses says a police officer fatally shot a man in South Philadelphia last night, according to TV reports.

The victim and a woman had an argument at a bar near 22nd and Cross Street, and the dispute continued when she walked outside, according to 6ABC.

The man allegedly said he had a gun and threatened to use it, the report said.

According to witnesses, CBS3 reported, an officer at the scene told the victim to "put something down," but the man made a reaching motion, when the officer fired once, hitting the man in the chest.

The victim was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Police-involved shootings are investigated by the force's internal affairs unit.

A police spokeswoman said official comment would come later this morning.
