The National Constitution Center gave its Liberty Medal to U.S. Rep. John Lewis on Sept. 19 for his heroic leadership in the civil rights movement. Lewis, who also has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is coauthor of the New York Times best-selling trilogy March, and the only surviving member of the Big Six organizers. The Liberty Medal ceremony included remarks from chief operating officer Vince Stango; Cynthia MacLeod, National Historic Park superintendent; CEO Jeffrey Rosen; and a video greeting from Morgan Freeman. More than 1,000 people heard a performance by the Mother Bethel American Methodist Episcopal Church Choir, and a president's reception was held afterward.
