Opera North, the oldest African American opera company in Philadelphia, celebrated its 40th anniversary of incorporation Nov. 26 at Arcadia University in Glenside. Opera North seeks to impact the quality of life and developmental experiences of underserved communities that have little or no exposure to the arts, hopes to create performance opportunities for talented yet underexposed African American artists, and seeks to highlight the many contributions of African Americans to the operatic genre. The gala event featured soprano Carmen Balthrop performing "Songs of Color," a reception, and silent auction.
